How Water Damages Some Kinds of Attic Insulation

Many older attics are insulated with fiberglass batt insulation. Much better insulation products are available today, but the reality for homeowners with fiberglass insulation in their attics is that fiberglass and water don’t mix. If the glass fibers sandwiched inside the batts are wetted, the batts compress and many of the tiny air pockets between the fibers disappear.

It is these air pockets -- not the glass fibers -- that slow the movement of heat out of your home when you’re trying to stay warm in winter. In summer, they slow heat from entering your living spaces when you’re trying to stay cool. Insulation that has become saturated and compressed will never regain its full effectiveness, costing you hundreds of dollars in unnecessarily high energy bills annually.

When insulation, framing, roof decking and other surfaces stay wet for more than a few days, you can also expect mold and mildew to grow – the microscopic spores of which can cause respiratory irritation and illness for those living in the rooms below. Left unchecked long enough, wood may begin to rot, causing structural damage that’s expensive to repair.

Ask your Olneya Restoration Group technician about replacement insulation that will remain unaffected by moisture should future leaks or condensation occur.

Blown in Fiberglass Insulation Installed

We provide many types of insulation for an attic. If your insulation is damaged from water, we can replace batt or cellulose insulation.

Sources of Water in the Attic

  • Condensation where warm moist air meets cold surfaces, such as the underside of a roof deck.
  • Unvented bathroom and kitchen vents that terminate in the attic. These vents can deliver tremendous amount of moisture into the attic, where it can condense and damage existing insulation.
  • Roof leaks. If your roof is leaking or was damaged during a storm, there is a good chance water is getting into your insulation and rendering it ineffective. Contact Olneya Restoration Group to have the leak repaired and to learn more about our other roofing solutions in Missouri and Illinois.
  • Condensate from HVAC equipment. Air conditioners, furnaces, and humidifiers, if not maintained, can leak condensate into insulated areas, ruining ceilings as well as insulation. Leaks due to burst pipes from an attic-mounted boiler can quickly ruin various types of fiber-based insulation.
  • Ice dams. In northern climates, ice dams are a common problem. Pooling of snow melt behind an ice dam can pour gallons of water on to insulation and the rooms below.
  • Water damage to insulation that occurs due to fire fighting, in the event of a house fire.
